Making the Most of Your Outdoor Space This Winter: Covered Seating, Pergolas & Shelters

Don't write off your garden for six months

The British winter is long enough that retreating indoors from October to April means losing half your home's footprint. But a well-designed covered seating area changes the equation entirely — it gives you a sheltered, usable outdoor room that works in rain, wind and cold, and it adds genuine value to the property.

The secret is treating the covered area as a real room, not just a roof over a chair. Here's how to get it right.

Choose the right structure

Freestanding pergolas with a solid or louvered roof. A timber or aluminium pergola with a fixed or adjustable roof is the most versatile option. Louvered roofs let you open up in summer and close down in winter; solid-roofed versions keep rain off completely. Add side panels or retractable screens for wind protection and you have a three-season (or four-season) room.

Lean-to shelters. Where space is tight, a lean-to against the house or a boundary wall is efficient and sheltered on three sides. These are quicker and cheaper to build and naturally protected from prevailing winds.

Garden rooms and pods. For full winter use, an insulated garden room with glazing is the ultimate — but even a semi-open sheltered pod with a fire pit nearby extends your outdoor season dramatically.

Make it warm

A roof keeps rain off but doesn't keep you warm. To use the space through winter you need a heat source — see our guide to fire pits and outdoor heating. Combine overhead cover with a fire pit or patio heater and a 5°C evening becomes genuinely comfortable.

Make it dry underfoot

This is the detail most people miss. A covered seating area is useless if the ground around it is a quagmire. Lay a proper paved base — sandstone or porcelain — with correct falls so water runs away from the seating, not towards it. We always build the hard surface first and the structure on top.

Make it light and layered

Winter evenings are dark by 4:30pm, so lighting is essential. We integrate warm low-level lighting, string lights under the beams, and uplighters on nearby planting. Add weatherproof cushions, blankets in a storage bench, and a side table for drinks, and the space becomes somewhere you actually want to spend time.

Materials that suit winter

  • Porcelain paving — low porosity, so it doesn't go green and slippery like some sandstone can in shade.
  • Aluminium pergola frames — won't rot, need no treatment, outlast timber.
  • Composite decking — barefoot-friendly even when damp, no splinters, no rotting boards.

The payoff

A covered, heated, well-lit seating area is the single highest-impact upgrade you can make for year-round use. It turns a summer-only garden into a 12-month living space — and it's the feature that sells houses in our experience.
