5 Signs Your Cheshire Garden Needs Professional Landscaping
Most gardens don't fail overnight — they slide slowly from 'a bit tired' to 'we never use it'. Here are the five signs we see most often across South Manchester and Cheshire, and what putting each one right actually involves.
1. Your patio is sinking, cracking or growing weeds
Uneven slabs and widening joints almost always mean the patio was laid without a proper sub-base. Cosmetic fixes don't last: the right repair is excavation and a rebuild on 100mm+ of compacted stone with a full mortar bed. A properly built replacement will outlast the house's next two owners.
2. The lawn is waterlogged for half the year
Heavy clay soil is common across Cheshire, and poor drainage turns lawns into bogs from October to March. Solutions range from aeration and topdressing for mild cases, to French drains and soakaways for serious ones. Often the best answer is rethinking the layout — more paving and raised beds where water pools, healthy lawn where the ground drains.
3. You have a slope you can't use
Sloping gardens are wasted space until they're terraced. Retaining walls, sleeper steps and levelled areas transform an unusable bank into distinct zones — a dining terrace, a lawn, a play area. It's the single most transformative project we do.
4. The fence is failing and the boundaries feel scruffy
Leaning posts and patched panels drag the whole garden down, whatever else you do. New fencing costs £80–£130 per panel installed locally, and combined with clean edges and fresh planting, it reframes the entire space.
5. You avoid the garden because it's all maintenance, no pleasure
If every free weekend goes on catching up rather than enjoying, the design is working against you. Well-planned hard landscaping — generous paving, defined beds, quality edging — dramatically cuts upkeep. Pair it with a regular maintenance visit and the garden looks after itself.
