Five Low-Maintenance Plants for South Manchester Gardens

Five Low-Maintenance Plants for South Manchester Gardens
Not everyone wants to spend every weekend in the garden. If you'd rather have a space that looks good with minimal effort, the key is choosing the right plants. Here are five that thrive in our climate and ask for very little in return.
1. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Lavender loves the sun and hates wet feet — perfect for South Manchester's free-draining soils. Once established, it needs almost no watering and just an annual trim after flowering to keep it compact.
Best for: Sunny borders, path edges, and containers. The bees love it.
2. Ornamental Grasses (Miscanthus, Stipa, Pennisetum)
Grasses give you structure, movement, and winter interest — and they're incredibly tough. Plant them in spring, cut them back to the ground in March, and that's your maintenance done for the year.
Best for: Adding texture and late-season interest. They look stunning in autumn light.
3. Hebe
Hebes are evergreen shrubs that flower for months and ask for nothing beyond a light trim to keep them in shape. They're hardy, reliable, and come in a range of sizes — from low ground cover to waist-high shrubs.
Best for: Year-round structure and long-lasting colour. They're particularly good in coastal-exposed gardens.
4. Hardy Geranium (Geranium rozanne or similar)
Not to be confused with the tender pelargoniums, hardy geraniums are bulletproof. They flower from May to the first frost, spread to cover ground (so weeds can't get in), and just need cutting back once a year.
Best for: Ground cover at the front of borders. They'll fill gaps and suppress weeds.
5. Skimmia
Skimmia is the answer for those tricky shady spots where nothing else seems to grow. It's evergreen, has clusters of red buds through winter, and needs zero pruning. It does need both male and female plants if you want berries — but even without, the foliage is glossy and reliable.
Best for: Shady corners and north-facing borders where other plants struggle.
The Golden Rule
Low-maintenance doesn't mean no-maintenance. Even the toughest plants need watering in their first year while they establish. After that, these five will look after themselves — leaving you to enjoy the garden rather than work in it.
