How to Get a Lawn Worth Sitting On

How to Get a Lawn Worth Sitting On
A lawn that's thick, green, and stripey isn't the result of luck or expensive products — it's about doing the right things at the right time. Here's the routine we recommend to our maintenance clients across South Manchester and Cheshire.
Mowing: The Foundation
Most people mow too short. Cutting the grass to the bone stresses the plant, weakens the roots, and lets weeds and moss in. Here's the rule:
Never remove more than a third of the grass height in one cut.
For most lawns, that means setting the mower to 25–40mm in spring and autumn, and 30–50mm in summer. Mow weekly during the growing season — little and often beats a savage cut every fortnight.
Feeding: Three Times a Year
A lawn that's never fed will slowly thin out and moss will take over. A simple feeding schedule:
- Spring (March–April): A spring/summer lawn feed with nitrogen to kick-start growth
- Summer (June–July): A light top-up feed if the lawn is looking tired
- Autumn (September–October): An autumn feed low in nitrogen, high in potassium — this toughens the grass up for winter
Don't be tempted to over-feed. Too much nitrogen gives you soft, lush growth that's prone to disease.
Scarifying and Aerating
Once a year, usually in autumn:
- Scarify — rake out the dead thatch and moss that builds up at the base of the grass. This lets water and air reach the roots.
- Aerate — use a fork or aerator to create holes in the lawn. This relieves compaction and improves drainage.
On heavy clay soils (common across Greater Manchester), aeration is essential — without it, the lawn turns into a puddle every winter.
Dealing with Moss
Moss is a symptom, not a disease. It thrives where grass struggles — in shade, in compacted soil, in damp conditions. Kill the moss (with iron sulphate or a moss killer), scarify it out, then fix the underlying cause:
- Aerate compacted ground
- Improve drainage in wet areas
- Prune trees and shrubs that cast heavy shade
- Overseed with a shade-tolerant grass seed
The Secret: Consistency
The difference between an average lawn and a great one isn't one big treatment — it's consistent, correct mowing and feeding through the year. That's why our maintenance clients get a scheduled visit every two weeks through the growing season.
