The Real Cost of a New Driveway in 2026

The Real Cost of a New Driveway in 2026

The Real Cost of a New Driveway

We get asked "how much is a new driveway?" every week. The honest answer is: it depends on the size, the material, the access, and the state of the existing surface. But here's a proper breakdown so you know what to expect.

Block Paving

Block paving remains the most popular choice across South Manchester and Cheshire. It's hard-wearing, looks good, and individual blocks can be replaced if one gets damaged.

Typical cost: £150–£180 per square metre (installed).

That includes excavation, sub-base, edge restraints, the blocks themselves, kiln-dried sand, and compaction. A standard 50m² driveway comes in at roughly £7,500–£9,000.

Resin-Bound

Resin-bound driveways give a smooth, porous, contemporary finish. They're more expensive but need less maintenance and look very clean.

Typical cost: £180–£250 per square metre (installed).

The higher cost reflects the premium materials and the specialist installation process. A 50m² resin driveway is typically £9,000–£12,500.

Tarmac

Tarmac is the practical, cost-effective choice — particularly for larger driveways. It's durable, weather-resistant, and quick to lay.

Typical cost: £120–£150 per square metre (installed).

The Extras That Catch People Out

The per-square-metre price is only part of the story. These are the things that can add to the cost:

  • Excavation and waste removal — if the existing surface is deep or there's made-up ground beneath
  • Drainage — SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) regulations mean most driveways need a drainage solution
  • Edging and kerbs — granite or concrete edging adds to the cost but finishes the job properly
  • Dropped kerb — if you need a new vehicle crossover, that's a separate cost and requires council approval
