How to Choose the Right Paving Material for Your Patio

How to Choose the Right Paving Material
The paving you choose sets the tone for your entire garden. Get it right and you've got a patio that looks better and lasts longer. Get it wrong and you'll be lifting slabs within five years. Here's a straightforward breakdown of the three main options we install across South Manchester and Cheshire.
Indian Sandstone
Sandstone is our most popular choice, and for good reason. It's natural, so every slab has its own colour variation — riven texture, subtle veining, warm tones. It looks at home in both period and modern gardens.
Pros: Natural appearance, hard-wearing, affordable, widely available in a range of colours (Raj Green, Kandla Grey, Autumn Brown). Cons: Needs sealing to resist staining, slightly uneven surface, can weather if not maintained.
Sandstone sits in the middle of the price range — more than concrete, less than porcelain — and it's the best all-rounder for most family gardens.
Porcelain Paving
Porcelain is the modern choice. It's engineered to be consistent, stain-resistant, and incredibly low-maintenance. If you want a clean, contemporary look with sharp lines, porcelain is the way to go.
Pros: Stain-resistant, low maintenance, consistent colour, frost-proof, won't fade. Cons: More expensive, harder to cut (needs a diamond blade), can be slippery when wet unless you choose a textured finish.
Porcelain is ideal for homeowners who want a premium, contemporary finish and don't mind paying a bit more upfront.
Concrete Paving
Concrete is the budget-friendly option, and modern concrete paving is a long way from the grey slabs of the 1990s. Today's ranges include textured finishes, weathered tones, and even stone-effect designs.
Pros: Most affordable, consistent size and thickness, easy to cut and lay, available in a wide range of finishes. Cons: Can look uniform, less natural character, may fade over time, shorter lifespan than sandstone or porcelain.
Concrete is the right choice when budget is the priority but you still want a proper patio — laid on a good sub-base, it'll give you years of service.
The Real Decision: The Sub-Base
Whichever material you choose, the thing that determines whether your patio lasts is the sub-base. A £40/sqm patio laid on 150mm of properly compacted Type 1 MOT will outlast a £100/sqm patio laid on a bed of sand. We always excavate, lay a compacted sub-base, and bed the paving properly — whatever the material.
