A Season-by-Season Garden Maintenance Calendar for Cheshire Gardens
Cheshire's mild, wet climate is generous to gardens — and to weeds, moss and hedges. Here's the maintenance calendar our team works to across South Manchester, so you know exactly what your garden needs and when.
Spring (March – May)
The busiest season. Priorities:
- First cuts: start mowing high in March, dropping the blades gradually as growth accelerates
- Scarify and aerate lawns in April to remove winter moss — essential in our wet climate
- Feed: a spring lawn feed and a general-purpose feed for borders
- Mulch borders with bark to lock in moisture and suppress summer weeds
- Prune spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, ribes) immediately after flowering
Summer (June – August)
- Mow weekly — Cheshire lawns grow fast after rain
- Trim hedges in late June once nesting season quietens (always check for active nests first)
- Deadhead roses and perennials to keep colour going
- Water new planting deeply twice a week rather than lightly every day
Autumn (September – November)
The most important season for next year's garden:
- Scarify, aerate and overseed lawns in September — the single best thing you can do for a Manchester lawn
- Final hedge cut of the year in September/October
- Leaf clearance — left on lawns, wet leaves kill the grass beneath in weeks
- Cut back perennials and lift tender plants before the first frost
- Plant spring bulbs by November
Winter (December – February)
Quieter, but not idle:
- Prune deciduous trees, fruit trees and wisteria while dormant
- Renovate overgrown hedges — hard reduction is best done in winter
- Repair and treat fences, clean paving, service the hard landscaping
- Plan projects: winter is the ideal time to book landscaping work for spring — good landscapers' spring diaries fill by February
