Block Paving vs Resin Driveways: Which Is Best for Your Manchester Home?
A new driveway is often the first thing visitors — and potential buyers — see. In South Manchester and Cheshire, two options dominate: traditional block paving and modern resin-bound surfacing. Here's how they compare.
Cost comparison (2026 local prices)
- Block paving: £70–£120 /m² installed
- Resin-bound: £60–£100 /m² installed (over an existing sound base; more if a new base is needed)
A typical double driveway of 40–50m² will cost £3,000–£6,000 in either material, depending on the base work required.
Durability
Block paving is the proven performer. Laid on a properly compacted sub-base, it comfortably lasts 25+ years, and individual blocks can be lifted and replaced if damaged or stained.
Resin-bound surfaces typically last 15–25 years. They're UV-stable and crack-resistant when installed over a solid base — but the base is everything. Resin laid over failing concrete or tarmac will mirror every crack beneath it.
Drainage and planning permission
Here's something many homeowners don't realise: if you pave over more than 5m² of front garden with an impermeable surface, you need planning permission — unless the surface is permeable or drains to a lawn or border.
Resin-bound (not resin-bonded) surfacing is naturally permeable, so it usually complies automatically. Block paving can be made compliant with permeable blocks or properly designed drainage. We handle this on every driveway we build.
Maintenance
Block paving needs an annual clean and occasional re-sanding to keep weeds out of the joints — our pressure washing service handles exactly this.
Resin just needs a periodic sweep and a light wash. Moss can form in shaded areas but comes off easily.
Kerb appeal and value
Both add value. Block paving suits period and traditional homes common in areas like Didsbury, Cheadle and Bramhall. Resin's seamless, contemporary finish works beautifully on modern properties and awkward curved driveways.
